Puck Cancer: Skating for a Cause That Matters

by | Jan 24, 2025

For the past seven years, I’ve laced up my skates to participate in the 11 Day Power Play in Buffalo, New York. This event has been one of the most impactful experiences of my life, combining my passion for hockey with a commitment to making a real difference in the fight against cancer.

For me, this effort is deeply personal, summed up in two words: Puck Cancer.

What the 11 Day Power Play Has Achieved

Over the past eight years, the 11 Day Power Play has raised an incredible $11 million. These funds have made a measurable impact in our community, providing critical support to families and advancing cancer research. Here’s what has been accomplished:

  • $7 million donated to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center for research and wellness programs.
  • 670 kids sent to Camp Good Days, offering a place of comfort and joy for children impacted by cancer.
  • 230 wishes granted to families in Western New York, helping bring hope and happiness during difficult times.

These numbers represent lives changed and futures made brighter because of this event.

My Personal Connection

Cancer is a reality that has deeply affected my family. My sister is fighting metastatic melanoma, and my father is battling metastatic pancreatic cancer. Watching their strength as they confront these challenges is a constant reminder of why this effort matters so much.

Hockey has always been something I’ve enjoyed, but participating in the 11 Day Power Play has given it a deeper purpose. Skating in this event allows me to contribute in a meaningful way to a cause that directly impacts my family and so many others.

The Purple Parrots and a Team Effort

Since 2018, I’ve been part of The Purple Parrots, a group of close friends dedicated to this mission. Together, we’ve raised over $345,000, with my personal fundraising totaling more than $34,000.

While our team works hard toward this shared goal, Puck Cancer has become my personal mantra—a way to channel my energy and focus into the fight against cancer.

Making an Impact Beyond the Ice

The funds raised through the 11 Day Power Play go beyond numbers:

  • Supporting groundbreaking cancer research at Roswell Park.
  • Granting wishes and creating joy for families in difficult times.
  • Providing vital resources to help families manage the financial and emotional strain of cancer.

It’s about changing lives and showing that even in the toughest battles, there’s a community ready to stand with you.

How You Can Help

The fight against cancer is a team effort, and anyone can play a part. Whether you donate, volunteer, or simply share the mission of the 11 Day Power Play, your support matters.

Why I’ll Keep Skating

Every time I step onto the ice, I think about my family’s battles and those of so many others. It’s not just about the game—it’s about making a difference, however I can.

To my teammates, supporters, and everyone who has contributed to this cause: thank you. Together, we’re proving that even small actions can add up to something significant.

Let’s keep pushing forward.

Puck Cancer. Always.
