When I think about why I fight against cancer, my mind always goes back to 8th grade. That year, I lost a close friend to cancer—a loss that changed how I viewed the disease forever. It was the first time I truly understood how cancer doesn’t just attack bodies; it attacks lives, families, and dreams. Ever since then, I’ve carried a determination to do something about it.
In 2017, I found my way to the 11 Day Power Play, or should I say, it found me. I remember the day when a group of guys came into the gym where I worked, stating they were going to play hockey for 11 days straight to raise funds for cancer research and to benefit those battling the disease. What started as a coaching opportunity quickly turned into a passion and a purpose. Year after year, I’ve had the privilege of providing medical care for and coaching some of the most resolute and resilient athletes I’ve ever met—all fighting for a cause bigger than themselves. The sense of community and shared commitment is something truly special.
But coaching wasn’t enough. I wanted to do more. I wanted to push myself physically and mentally to honor those who are fighting or have fought cancer. That’s when I turned my passion for running into a way to get into the fight. I ran the Berlin Marathon in 2023 and the Chicago Marathon in 2024, proudly wearing my custom 11 Day Power Play racing singlet, and raising funds along the way. Each mile was a reminder of the battles people with cancer face—grueling, exhausting, but driven by hope and determination. Running became a way to turn my passion into action, and each race became an opportunity to raise more funds and awareness.
Then came the 2024 Community Shift—a chance to lace up my skates and hit the ice, pushing beyond my limits to support those who need it most. I played house hockey as a child and in adult leagues previously, but this felt different. Skating for hours on end alongside others who share my drive and dedication made me feel part of something truly extraordinary.
Every step and every stride, whether on the pavement or the ice, is for those who can’t fight anymore and those who continue to battle. It’s for my friend, my grandmother, my cousins, my friends, and for every family affected by cancer. I’m proud to be part of the 11 Day Power Play community, and I’ll keep pushing forward until we see a world without cancer.
